Track Day Car Preparation
Q. Can you please advise what safety equipment is required for taking my WRX onto the track on track tuning days, eg helmet, fire extinguisher etc, and are we allowed to take another club member as a passenger.?

A. The basics are that you need a helmet to Australian Standards AS1698 or equivalent. You also need a fire extinguisher of at least 1KG (powder type). In all other respects the car can be standard.

If you have a motorcycle then the chances are that your helmet will meet those standards but in order to check you should be able to see a label on the helmet which has the Australian Standards logo with the letters AS1698. Quality helmets are available from all Motorcycle dealers. Like all protective gear how much you are prepared to pay is dependent on how fussy you are. Get a good quality full face helmet that is nice and comfortable. While doing track work a suggestion is to remove the visor otherwise it can get a bit claustrophobic in the car.

As far as a fire extinguisher is concerned depending on where you live you should be able to organise one through most reputable workshops such as Maximum Motorsport, Xspeed, Racetorque or Revlimit (to name a few). Maximum motorsport provide a nice bracket/cradle that mounts in front of the passengers seat using the front seat mount retaining bolts. Quite neat. Other workshops would most likely do something similar in a bracket/cradle. The mounting location is not critical though having it in front of the passenger seat means that it is very easy to get to.

You could go to the trouble of buying a spare set of rims to fit a set of R-spec tyres too but if that sort of expenditure is not on your list of priorities then perhaps for the first event just stick to your road tyres.

Before an event we issue a document to all participants that discusses the things you need to attend to in order to prepare your car. For example:

  • Get the car serviced if it is nearly due.
  • Make sure that tyres have adequate tread and pressures are elevated by about 6-8psi compared to normal (about 40psi front). This stiffens up the side-wall's on the tyre to help reduce the tendency of the shoulders to be badly scuffed on cornering.
  • Make sure that you have plenty of brake pad thickness. If they are down a bit then put a new set in. Ferodo 2500 pads are a good all-round track/street pad.

Unfortunately participants cannot take a passenger with them on the track. Instructors are the only people who can take another person in the car. This is a CAMS regulation as we run these events under CAMS permits and regulations.

Have a look at this document which is a generic version of the Driver Training notes issued to participants prior to a track event.
