Club level motor sport has received a major boost through the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport's 'Club Funding Program' with a total of nine grants offered to clubs from all over Australia.

After the successful implementation of the program in 2004, it has grown from strength to strength, with 13 applications received in 2004, 15 in 2005 and 26 this year. The focus of the program is on projects that aim to increase junior and female participation levels and strengthen the club motor sport system.

"Club activity is the backbone of motor sport in Australia and its development is essential in maintaining the health of the sport at the elite level," said CAMS Member Services and Development Manager, Quentin Crombie.

"CAMS has made significant progress with its sports development initiatives at both the elite and grass roots level in recent times and this could not have been possible without the support of the Australian Sports Commission."

Using the funds provided, Junior Development Programs will be implemented by the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club (Vic), Shepparton and District Car Club (Vic), North Shore Sports Car Club (NSW), MG Car Club (Vic) and Rover Scouts Motor Sport Club (Vic), which will give young motor sport enthusiasts an opportunity to acquire skills and develop an understanding of safety, car control and responsible vehicle management within a controlled environment.

The Hills District Car Club (NSW) and MG Car Club Newcastle (NSW) have both received grants to construct dirt circuits which will be used for motorkhana and junior events. A grant has also been provided to the Impreza WRX Owners Club of WA (WA) to purchase vitally important safety and communications equipment.

Another club to benefit from the program will be the Smash Repair Team (NSW). This team is made up of young automotive apprentices who attend rounds of the V8 Supercar Championship Series and Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series, stepping into help those teams in a crisis. The Smash Repair Team gives young people an opportunity to improve their skills in a very practical environment outside of the classroom.
